Do you like to read?

“In the case of good books, the point is not how many of them you can get through, but rather how many can get through to you.”
Mortimer J. Adler

I am a huge fan of reading! I can tell you something amazing. When I was in grade school I was not a fan of reading. As a matter of fact I went to all Catholic Private Schools even through High School. About the fourth grade, my teacher was Mrs. Carlson. She was truly a great teacher but she would have the students raise their hands in order to read “out loud” the text in class. I was the student who never raised her hand to read, because I could not comprehend what I was reading. I was so worried about not pronouncing the words correctly or not knowing a word that I lived in fear as I did this. Mrs. Carlson would tell me, Miss Jackie go ahead and read the next page. I hated that she did this and I felt like she was “picking” on me or trying to embarrass me in front of my fellow students. She really was doing her job and teaching me to do what I did not want to do. As I became a better reader I still could not tell the students or teacher what I just read. It made no sense to me at all. The teacher would ask me a question about what I just read and I could not answer it and then another “smarter” student was able to answer her question. I remember feeling so “relieved” to have that over with. As much as this was a horrible experience at such a young age, it made me into the “reader” I am today! I will talk more about that later.
If you have had an experience such as the one I have had, please share in the comment section of this blog. I promise to respond to each one of you.
